A Censored Demand System Analysis of Fruits and Vegetables by Different Income Groups Using Micro Data AgEcon
Niu, Luyuan; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
This study examines demand for fruits and vegetables segmented by income levels in a complete demand system framework using the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CEX) from 2002 to 2006. Results show that disparities are found between high-income households and low-income households. Seasonal effects and demographic variables, such as household heads’ race and gender, region, household size and household composition, play an important role in fruit and vegetable consumption for both categories of household. In contrast, urban status, household heads’ educational level and age are not found to have a statistically significant impact for low-income households. Conditional price elasticities indicate that processed fruits and vegetables, fresh fruits and fresh...

A Hedonic Metric Approach to Estimating the Demand for Differentiated Products: An Application to Retail Milk Demand AgEcon
Gulseven, Osman; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
This article introduces the Hedonic Metric (HM) approach as an original method to model the demand for differentiated products. Using this approach, initially we create an n-dimensional hedonic space based on the characteristic information available to consumers. Next, we allocate products into this space and estimate the elasticities using distances. What distinguishes our model from traditional demand models such as Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) and Rotterdam Model is the way we link elasticities with product characteristics. Moreover, our model significantly reduces the number of parameters to be estimated, thereby making it possible to estimate large number of differentiated products in a single demand system. We applied our model to estimate the...

A MODEL OF IMPERFECT COMPETITION USING MARGINAL INPUT AND OUTPUT PRICES: APPLICATION TO THE BEEF PACKING INDUSTRY AgEcon
Muth, Mary K.; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
Based on Diewert's idea that models under competition can be generalized to imperfect competition using marginal prices, we develop a test for imperfect competition in the beef packing industry. Our model is more general and flexible than those depending on empricial estimates of the input supply and output demand elasticities.

A Structural Econometric Model of Consumer Demand at Pick-Your-Own Fruit Operations AgEcon
Carpio, Carlos E.; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
This paper develops a fully structural econometric consumer demand model for goods which have time and monetary costs, and where time spent obtaining the goods also enters into the utility function. The model is used to analyze customers'’ decision to buy pick-your-own versus pre-harvested fruit at North Carolina pick-your-own fruit operations. The empirical application distinguishes the double effect of time as a resource constraint and also providing utility. Elasticity estimates show that strawberries sold at pick-your-own operations are price elastic, with pick-your-own fruit being less price elastic than pre-harvested fruit.

Alcoholic Beverages and Cigarettes: Complements or Substitutes? A Pseudo Panel Approach AgEcon
Koksal, Aycan; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
In this paper, using pseudo panel data we analyze the relation between cigarette and alcoholic beverage consumption within the rational addiction framework. We believe that pseudo panel data approach has many advantages compared to aggregate and panel data models. We found that alcoholic beverages are complements for cigarettes, while it is not the same the other way around. Moreover, we found that alcohol is a gateway for cigarette which further supports our conclusion concerning the reinforcing effect of alcohol consumption on cigarette consumption. We believe that drinking works as a trigger for smoking especially in social settings like bars while it is also possible (although less likely) that people who want to cut cigarette consumption might...

Assessment of Import Restrictions on the U.S. Meat and Livestock Markets: An Application to the Case of Discovery of BSE on Canadian Cattle AgEcon
Boonsaeng, Tullaya; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of the discovery of BSE in Canadian cattle on the imported and domestic demand for livestock and meat in the United States. A multi-market partial equilibrium model is utilized to simulate the effects of policy-induced shifts in quantities of imports supplied from Canada on the meat and livestock industries. Our simulation results predict small effects on cattle.

Demand for Fall Annual and Perennial Plants: Pansies and Mums in Independent Garden AgEcon
Wohlgenant, Michael K.; Rezitis, Anthony N.; Safley, Charles D..
Analysis of demand for pansies and mums sold in independent garden centers indicates that price and age are important factors influencing demand. In the fall of 1996, data were collected from a survey of independent garden centers in North Carolina. Statistical analysis was conducted by estimating the relationship between consumer expenditure shares of pansies and mums and prices paid per plants, household income, and various demographic and product characteristic variables. The models were estimated by the least-squares method with correction for selectivity bias, resulting from zero purchases. Own-price elasticities of demand for pansies and mums of –0.80 and –0.76, respectively, were estimated. The results also indicate that older customers who live...

DEMAND FOR PLANTS SOLD IN NORTH CAROLINA GARDEN CENTERS AgEcon
Abdelmagid, Banaga D.; Wohlgenant, Michael K.; Safley, Charles D..
Demand for selected nursery plants sold in North Carolina (i.e., begonia, dianthus, geranium, impatiens, marigold, petunia, and vinca) was found to be affected more by prices than by income, demographic, and other variables. By using cross-sectional data, a modified AIDS model, incorporating demographic variables and quadratic income response, was estimated. Inverse Mills's ratios were also included in the model to correct for selectivity bias, resulting from zero purchases. Significant own-price elasticities ranged from -0.71 to -1.65, and income elasticities ranged from -0.78 to 0.41.

Do Economic Restrictions Improve Forecasts? AgEcon
Murphy, Elizabeth A.; Norwood, F. Bailey; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
A previous study showed that imposing economic restrictions improves the forecasting ability of food demand systems, thus warranting their use even when rejected in-sample. This study attempts to determine whether this is due solely to the fact that restrictions improve degrees of freedom. Results indicate that restrictions improve forecasting ability even when not derived from economic theory, but theoretical restrictions forecast best.

Murphy, Elizabeth A.; Norwood, F. Bailey; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
A previous study showed that imposing economic restrictions improves the forecasting ability of food demand systems, thus warranting their use even when they are rejected in-sample. This article evaluates whether this result is due to economic restrictions enhancing degrees of freedom or containing nonsample information. Results indicate that restrictions improve forecasting ability even when they are not derived from economic theory, but theoretical restrictions forecast best.

EFFECTS OF AN EXPORT SUBSIDY ON THE U.S. COTTON INDUSTRY AgEcon
Duffy, Patricia A.; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
In this study, the effects of an export subsidy for cotton are analyzed using a linear elasticity model. The study explicitly addresses the interaction of current domestic policies with the proposed export subsidy. An export subsidy may be a successful method of reducing the government costs of the cotton program.

Effects of Container Size on Overconsumption of Carbonated Soft Drinks AgEcon
Zheng, Xiaoyong; Zhen, Chen; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
We take a structural approach to examine the effects of larger container size on consumption of carbonated soft drinks---using Nielsen Company's Homescan data on household purchases for the years 2004 through 2006. Our results show that by removing the price discount implicit in packages with larger container size, the average unit price the two households pay for CSD products increase and hence both households (both the low income and the high income) reduce their annual consumption of soft drinks by about 75%. This reduction is due to a combination of reduced number of purchases and switching to products with less number of bottles/cans.

ESTIMATING CROSS ELASTICITIES OF DEMAND FOR BEEF AgEcon
Wohlgenant, Michael K..
This paper examines the extent to which observed changes in per capita beef consumption can be accounted for by changes in relative prices and per capita real income. Particular attention was given to specifying the functional form by focusing on the nature of demand shifts over time. These considerations led to selection of the Fourier flexible form with a Fourier series expansion in relative meat prices. The results support the hypothesis that recent shifts in demand for beef can be attributed to changes in relative prices of competing meats, especially poultry.

EXIT OF MEAT SLAUGHTER PLANTS DURING IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PR/HACCP REGULATIONS AgEcon
Muth, Mary K.; Karns, Shawn A.; Wohlgenant, Michael K.; Anderson, Donald W..
Implementation of the Pathogen Reduction and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (PR/HACCP) regulations has occurred across all U.S. meat and poultry plants. A probit model is estimated to determine which factors have affected the probability of red meat slaughter plant exit during implementation of the regulations. While controlling for plant-level, company-level, regional-level, and supply conditions that may affect the probability of plant exit, smaller plants are found to exhibit a much greater probability of exit than larger plants. Other factors affecting plant exit include plant age, market share relative to the degree of market concentration, regional entry rates, and state-level wage rates.

Factors Influencing Consumers' Selection of Garden Centers AgEcon
Safley, Charles D.; Wohlgenant, Michael K..
A consumer-oriented survey at eighteen independently owned garden centers in North Carolina focused on why consumers selected a particular garden center and why they purchased the particular products they selected. Results indicate that potential customers are looking for garden centers that offer good quality plants, a wide selection of plant material, a knowledgeable sales staff, and a convenient location. There is also evidence that most shopping trips are planned and garden centers may be losing potential sales.
